About Champ Camp

Champ Camp is a chance for campers with disabilities to come and experience all that camp has to offer. Champ Campers are children, youth, or adults who function at a youth developmental level. They participate in swimming, crafts, hikes, Bible studies, singing, and other awesome activities especially tailored to meet their needs. Champ Campers are placed in cabins under the supervision of a specially trained Lutherhaven staffer.

As an Idaho Servant Adventure participant, you assist Lutherhaven staff by pairing up with a Champ Camper “buddy” for the week, guiding them through each day’s activities and experiencing camp right alongside them! ISA participants do not stay with the Champ Campers at night, but are assigned their own sleeping cabins.

Nervous about connecting with your buddy?

Many Lutherhaven Champ Campers have been coming for years and are already looking forward to meeting you! No kidding! We assign buddies before the Champ Campers arrive on Sunday. ISA participants are part of the buddy assignment process as part of the Sunday pre-camp meeting, led by trained Lutherhaven staff. Don’t worry – you’ll be with a Lutherhaven staffer throughout your camp day.

Your week starts at 11:30AM on Sunday, where you’ll train and prep for the week. Campers arrive Sunday afternoon and stay through Friday lunch. Specific “Servant Event” time each day includes recreation (including high ropes and challenge course), evening programming, and time together in Bible study.

Your days will be very full, and so will your life, as you spend time with your new and very special friends!

What to expect when you’re with your buddy

Champ Campers have a wide range of diagnosis, abilities, and needs. The most important thing is to come with a heart of service and flexibility! Some campers want to be up front leading and singing every song at worships and campfires, others are way over-stimulated by all the noise and need to hang out in the back, or even slip out for a bit. Lutherhaven staff are there to help take care of campers and facilitate programs, 24/7, but Champ Campers benefit from additional one on one attention. That’s where you fit in!

Your role is camper focused. You’ll have scheduled time during the day to hang out with your friends and experience camp with your group– time not with your Champ Camp buddies.

Truly, Champ Campers are so excited to meet you and hang out with you. They think you are the coolest person ever, and you have the amazing opportunity to help them feel loved, included, and supported.

My daughter is a high functioning kid with autism. It's not always easy for her to 'fit' into a group, and because of her mannerisms and personality, she is also not the easiest kid to work with. I am so thankful to her Champ Camp buddy for her patience, and for making her feel loved and accepted. THANK YOU!!
